Update from the General Manager

Firstly I just wanted to say a big thank you once again to the whole team here at Federal. The last few months have been incredibly challenging, but to work with these people is truly a pleasure. Each and every one of them has accepted extra responsibility, forced leave and heavy workload, plus changes in job requirements without a single complaint. They are all working so well together and deserve huge credit. I hope you can take some time to thank them if you get a chance. We’ve done our best to make sure member services haven’t been affected. We are being very careful to not over commit resources until all revenue streams are back and running as normal.


Also, a thank you to the Directors, various committees and volunteers, as always they have been so supportive and willing to do whatever it takes to help the management team get the workload executed. This club needs you more than ever.


With the COVID-19 restrictions gradually easing we are seeing the club working back towards something like normal service. We will be taking functions and events bookings as of next week. You can now share golf carts again and Mark’s team will share some great new pricing available to members.


I’m sure you are noticing an increase in bookings demand for the golf course. We are ready to announce an open competition on Thursday with a special rate for regional visitors with handicaps for that day. We encourage you to consider trying to move your usual weekday booking to help us support the new initiative and ease pressure on Wednesday and other days in high demand. Stay tuned for more information.


We have well over 100 new playing members (a very large percentage of those below 35 years old) since this time last year, a remarkable effort considering some of the challenges we’ve faced. Also we were headed for a total of 30,000 total rounds of golf this time last year and we’re on track now for around 48,000 with 5 weeks of closure. An astonishing result- Mark Lazenby, Phil Mackay and the team deserve warm praise for executing a very careful plan. The pandemic itself has seen a slight bump in demand as well which we hope to capitalise on for the medium and long  term also.


I want to make a special note to thank member Dave Gollasch and his company Streamline Creative. I feel very strongly that the re-brand he helped us execute last year has greatly improved the club’s external communications- contributing to the upsurge in golf demand and enhancing the club’s reputation in the local community and market place. Some of the big equipment companies now use our logo to show samples!


You will find attached a new weekly activity calendar for both golf and the clubhouse. It’s critical to the strategic plan that we endeavour to make every day of the week a healthy one for the business itself. We are trying hard to bolster the social calendar and make the club your first consideration for dining or some fun and relaxation. You will see some interesting new menus on Member News and social media for Wednesday Steak & Schnitzel Night, Fun Friday Tapas Menu, and a new Sunday Brunch Menu. We hope you can consider bringing your partner or family along to try Executive Chef John Santos’ latest creations. John and his team are very excited to deliver new and exciting choices that represent great value for the quality we are offering. John and I have spent quite some time together sharing ideas with other key staff and some members on what to offer, so we hope you enjoy the changes and give us some feedback. We’re also re-vamping the wine offerings too in the near future. It’s a big priority to improve the clubhouse service and offerings.


We are very excited to be bringing back Sunday Brunches at Federal. We have noticed how difficult it is in Canberra to get a table on a Sunday morning and have introduced a special menu to help combat this! Invite your family for a catch up, we have some great options for kids too!

John’s Steak and Schnitzel Night- Wednesday the 8th July

Sunday Brunch on 12th July


We still have some space restrictions due to the pandemic so please make sure you book a table at the bar so you will not be disappointed.


We still have some huge challenges ahead of us but there have been some outstanding positives that we can all be proud of.


Lastly thanks to all the members who have been following the social distancing guidelines. As you all know we don’t make the rules but we must implement them and abide by them.
