Birch Trophy – David Brooker wins the Final!Published in Uncategorized
In the Final of the Birch Trophy (Individual Handicap Matchplay), David Brooker scored a 2 and 1 win over Rob Miller on Saturday 17 August. The match was very even throughout with there being no larger lead than two holes by either contestant. Both players were a little tentative in the earlier holes, but the standard of play became very high over the back nine. When the players stood on the 16th tee, Dave was two-up with three to play. However, Robbie demonstrated his fighting spirit to win that hole and then proceeded to play three great shots down the 17th to be on the green within birdie range. In true ‘Championship’ style, Dave responded with a great approach to finish even closer to the hole. Rob’s birdie attempt just slipped past the cup, allowing David the opportunity to seal victory with a winning birdie, an opportunity he duly converted to win the Birch Trophy for 2019.
Congratulations to both players for reaching the Final and for playing it in such great spirit. Thank you to all participants for competing in 2019. On your behalf I sincerely thank Nigel Powell for a great job in co-ordinating the event, for his generosity in donating the Prizes, and for the innovation of introducing a finals qualifying round robin to this year’s event.
